When are you too old to be CUTE?
Okay, let’s admit it … there are some things that just look a whole lot better on young girls, but does that mean that as we get older, we can’t like cute things? I look at a 20 year old wearing something cute and I am thinking, “I love it! I must buy it because it is soooo cute!!” But the reality is that TV shows and social media say that only the young girls can be cute, so you don’t see women in their 40s described as cute. They can be beautiful, pretty, gorgeous, sexy … but “cute” doesn’t fall into the normal description.
So the question is why is that? And can mature women pull off the “cute factor”? BTW, I’m not talking about 80 year old granny with the toothless grin cute! I’m talking about the hello kitty, wearing pink clothes with knee high socks, fluffy beanies, cropped t-shirts, adorably designed nail polish, long lashes with rosy cheeks and pink lips cute. I don’t know about you, but I keep trying. What is wrong with mature women wanting to be cute? One of my favorite movies is Enchanted. I love that song, “That’s How You Know” by Amy Adams in that movie. But why do I have to hide the fact that I still love these fairytales? Just because I’m in my 40s doesn’t mean that I stopped liking cute things — I love my cat ear hair band, pink shorts, pink lip gloss (although the color doesn’t really work for me) and cute perfume bottles.
Recently I came across some adorable bottled perfume. I couldn’t resist — I had to buy it. I actually made an excuse to buy it by saying that I was going to buy it for my older nieces (who are between 17 and 21 years old). I gave it to them and they said, “Auntie Jaclyn, do you think we are that young? These are for little kids.” Little did they know (and I’m not telling them either) that I bought some just for myself as well! I don’t understand it — don’t they appreciate how cute they are? Come on, look at the photo of these bottles. Aren’t they sooo cute?
I don’t know about you, but cute stuff makes me happy. It reminds me of my younger years and it makes me feel good. So, my view is that we are never too old to be CUTE and to like CUTE things. I love my cute perfume bottles and my cute PJs. If it makes us feel better, then I say “WHY NOT?” Who is to tell us that there is an age limit to being cute, acting cute, dressing cute? Even if I look a bit ridiculous in my cat ear hair bands (my husband and my kids think I look silly), I don’t care what they think … I’m still going to wear them because I CAN!
